About the Choir

Singing together since April 2009, Lichfield Gospel Choir now has more than 100 members. Our repertoire stretches across continents, embracing African, gospel and soulful music.

Whether religious or not, we all find the gospel music fun and uplifting. It warms our hearts and nourishes our souls, as well as providing us with lots of enjoyment and laughter.

Lichfield Gospel Choir grew out of the Lichfield Festival Chorus which came together under the guidance of the Birmingham based group “Black Voices” for a series of workshops, culminating in a concert at Lichfield Cathedral as part of the 2009 Lichfield Festival.

Many of us enjoyed that experience so much that we didn’t want to give up singing, and we decided to continue as a permanent choir. We met up in the autumn of 2009 and soon a committee had been formed, and, with the help of Black Voices, we were very lucky to secure the services of two very talented musical directors, Laura and Themba Mvula, to lead us.

In the years that have followed we have grown from strength to strength – not just in numbers (totalling around 90!) but in confidence and musicality.  We are now solely directed by Themba, who continues to stretch us as we try new styles and songs.  We love performing at the events we’re invited to and it’s amazing to see people in the audience or congregation joining in, clapping along and sometimes even dancing!

We hope to see you at one of our concerts soon.
